What jaggery genuinely has going for it
Jaggery is made by boiling sugarcane juice without the refining, bleaching and centrifuging that produces white sugar. That process retains molasses, and with it a real mineral fraction. Depending on the source and processing, 100g of jaggery can contain meaningful potassium, magnesium, and some iron — nutrients that white sugar has been stripped of entirely.
Jaggery also carries small amounts of plant polyphenols, and it is less processed by any reasonable definition. If you are choosing between two sweeteners purely on nutrient density, jaggery wins.
Why that advantage collapses in practice
The problem is dose. To get a day's worth of iron from jaggery, you would need to eat roughly 100g of it. That is 383 calories of pure sugar — around eight times the WHO's recommended daily limit for free sugars. You would meet your iron target and comprehensively wreck your blood glucose doing it.
At a realistic serving of 10g in your tea, the mineral contribution is a rounding error. You would get more iron from a single spoonful of sesame seeds, without the sugar load.
And the part almost nobody mentions
Jaggery's glycemic index is higher than white sugar's. The reason is chemical. White sugar is sucrose — a disaccharide that your body must split with the enzyme sucrase before either half can be absorbed. Jaggery contains a substantial proportion of already-free glucose and fructose, which need no such step and enter the bloodstream faster.
So the switch that millions of Indian households make for blood sugar reasons does the opposite of what is intended. If your goal is gentler glucose response, jaggery is the wrong direction.

What brown sugar actually is

Choose brown sugar if you prefer the caramel flavour in your baking or your coffee. Do not choose it for health — the difference from white sugar is inside the margin of error, and treating it as the healthier option tends to license eating more of it.

Misri is crystallised sucrose — chemically the same molecule as white sugar, formed into larger crystals by slow cooling. Its glycemic index and calorie content are effectively identical to white sugar. Ayurvedic tradition treats misri as cooling and it is commonly given for throat irritation, but from a metabolic standpoint misri and sugar are the same thing in different shapes.
Palm sugar and coconut sugar
Palm sugar and coconut sugar are the genuine exception in this list. Coconut sugar's glycemic index is around 54, placing it in the low band — lower than every other option here. It also contains inulin, a soluble fibre that slows glucose absorption. The catch is cost and availability: it is several times the price of sugar in India and less widely stocked. The calorie content is unchanged at 375 kcal per 100g.

Honey has the lowest calorie count in the table at 304 kcal per 100g — but only because roughly 17% of honey is water. Gram for gram of actual sugar, it is comparable. Its GI of around 58 is genuinely lower than sugar's, and it carries trace antioxidants and enzymes. Honey is a modest improvement, not a health food. It should still be counted inside your daily sugar allowance.

This is worth stating bluntly, because the opposite belief is widespread. In a great many Indian households, a diabetes diagnosis is followed by swapping the sugar jar for gur, on the understanding that a natural, unrefined sweetener is safer. The intention is sound. The pharmacology is not.
Why jaggery is not diabetic-friendly
Jaggery is roughly 65–85% sucrose, with most of the remainder being free glucose and fructose. Once it reaches your small intestine, your body does not distinguish between glucose that arrived from a sugar cube and glucose that arrived from a block of gur. Both raise blood glucose. The free glucose in jaggery simply arrives sooner.
Its glycemic index of around 84 places jaggery firmly in the high band — above white bread. The trace iron and potassium it carries do nothing to slow that response.
Is brown sugar good for diabetes?
Also no. Brown sugar's glycemic index of roughly 64 is marginally lower than jaggery's, but it is still refined sugar with a little molasses added back. There is no meaningful difference from white sugar in how it affects blood glucose. The same applies to misri, which is chemically identical to white sugar.
What actually helps
- Reduce total free sugars rather than switching types. This is the change that moves HbA1c; sweetener substitution does not.
- Watch glycemic load, not just index. A small amount of a high-GI food can matter less than a large amount of a medium-GI one. Portion is doing most of the work.
- Never drink your sugar. Sweetened chai, packaged juice and soft drinks produce the sharpest glucose spikes because there is no fibre or fat to slow absorption.
- Pair any sweet with protein or fat — curd, nuts, or eating it at the end of a full meal rather than alone.

This is the question that matters far more than which sweetener you pick. The difference between jaggery and sugar is small. The difference between 25g of added sugar a day and 75g is enormous.
The World Health Organization recommends keeping free sugars below 10% of daily calories, with further benefit below 5%. On a 2,000 calorie diet that is under 50g per day, ideally under 25g — roughly six teaspoons.
That allowance covers everything: the sugar in your chai, the jaggery in your sabzi, the honey in your lemon water, and every gram hidden in biscuits, ketchup, packaged juice and malted drinks.

Now the caveat that matters more than the ranking: the gap between first and last place is small. All of them are around 4 calories per gram. All of them raise blood glucose. Moving from jaggery to coconut sugar while keeping your intake at 60g a day achieves very little. Cutting from 60g to 30g of anything on this list achieves a great deal.
